Need Tech Help

Post by opkier » Wed May 23, 2007 12:12 pm

Currently running a P5NSLI socket 775 ASUS board. The BIOS needs flashing, and I've never done it on an ASUS board. I've got the right update, but it's in a BIN file.

To top it off, my system doesn't have a floppy drive. I know if you screw up a flashing, you end up fucking over your system. Any help greatly appreciated.

First rule of flashing a BIOS.... don't.

Only exception.... you have a problem that is specifically said to be fixed by the update you're trying to install.

As for actually doing it without a floppy drive, ASUS should have an updater that can flash tbe BIOS from within Windows, although I've always done it with a floppy.

I'm not getting USB 2.0 support.
I cannot restart my system without it going into a restart loop for the next half hour, and I have to turn it off from the power cell.
In order for me to turn it on from a cold boot, I need to hit the power button, let it warm up, then reset it.

I need to fucking flash the BIOS. GIMMIE THE UPDATER!

... Opkier if you look on the ASUS website in downloads there will be a bios utility that can flash the bios in the .bin file for you. I would be careful however, because if during the flash anything happens, your computer will be a paperweight.

EDIT: Under the bios tab in downloads im pretty sure its the PCProbe util that will let you do it from within windows.

Double EDIT: Also, check your MOBO manual, some of the new bios's will let you update from a binary file stored on a USB pendrive. Mine does!

Oh I know about if anything happening during the flash. Had the power cut out at the college as I was flashing a full lab of new computers.

Fortunately, I had the presence of mind to flash em one at a time.

Looks like the PC probe only moniters voltage, temp and fan speeds, I don't see anything on it to do otherwise.

There's another program called AWDflash.exe and from the description, that should do it, but it doesn't seem to want to run from my desktop.

AHA, under the utilities tab for your MOBO downloads at the top, Asus Update. Thank me anytime by volunteering for a rep Shadow labs run.

-hits reset button-

-booting back into Win XP-

Okay, what the fuck just happened?

Oh, no sound, that's what's happened... FUCK.

In the midst of updating my chipset to the one on the Asus site, then going to try to reflash it.

I'm simply not getting any sound from my speakers or headset.

The first flash I did, the Asus updater only had "Beginning to erase EEPROM" for a good hour, then I reset it, Windows boots, but I get no sound from anything.

So you're using an on board sound card? Are you sure it didn't get disabled in the BIOS when you flashed it? If it was already enabled, maybe try booting with it disabled, then rebooting with it enabled. Also check under Device Manager if Windows even sees a sound card.

Alright flashed from 601 > 801 > 1104 > 1201 No problems there.

Still no sound, and yes, it is onboard sound. Device manager has it listed as it usually does. I'll go poke around in the BIOS then.
